SURGICAL ABORTION
Abortions are performed up to 15.6 weeks gestation. Pelvic examination and ultrasound, are performed to determine the exact length of pregnancy. It is common practice to use a local anesthetic for the cervix and I.V. (intravenous) sedation or "twilight sleep" to reduce anxiety and discomfort. You will be relaxed and less aware of what is going on around you ; some women fall into a light sleep and may not remember the procedure. The actual procedure, which is a vacuum aspiration, takes approximately 3-5 minutes and you may experience some mild to moderate cramping immediately after the procedure. You will be given an appropriate amount of recovery and observation time prior to leaving. Medications to prevent infection and control pain will be included.
Fees for Surgical Abortion include:
- Ultrasound
- Lab testing (pregnancy testing) urinalysis.
- Informed consent & post-operative instructions
- Anesthesia
- 1 month supply of Birth Control Pills
- Antibiotics and Pain Medication
- Check up after surgical procedure
If a patient is Rh negative, there is an additional fee for Rhogam.
Medical Abortion-Abortion Pill RU 486
The medical procedure, also called RU-486 or abortion by pill, is available up until the 7th week, dated from the first day of the last monthly period. The medical procedure works with two medications. The first medication, Mifepristone, blocks the pregnancy hormone and prevents the pregnancy from growing. You take this first medication during your appointment at the clinic. The second medication, Misoprostol, is taken by mouth approximately 48 hours after you take the first medication. The Misoprostol will make your uterus cramp and bleed and you will expel the pregnancy.
RU-486 is a very safe and effective procedure. It is an FDA approved treatment and it has been safely used to end pregnancy in the United States and Europe for many years. As with the surgical abortion, there are risks involved including incomplete procedure, retained products of conception, and infection. On the day of your appointment, we will go over all of the risks associated with RU-486 and answer any and all questions you may have. Because there is a small chance that RU-486 will not end your pregnancy, you must be willing to have a surgical procedure if the treatment fails.
